15 Feb Fireblitz Partners with Wolseley to Educate on Carbon Monoxide Legislation
In today’s world, safety in our homes is paramount. As the UK’s leading merchants in plumbing, heating, cooling, and infrastructure, Wolseley takes this responsibility seriously. That’s why Wolseley has partnered with Fireblitz, a trusted provider of fire safety solutions, to help educate their staff and customers on Carbon Monoxide Legislation.
Understanding the New Carbon Monoxide Regulations
The laws surrounding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the UK have recently undergone significant changes. Carbon monoxide, often referred to as ‘the silent killer’, poses a serious threat as it cannot be detected by human senses. The best defence against this deadly gas is a functioning carbon monoxide alarm, which can alert occupants to dangerous levels before it’s too late.
In 2022, many more domestic properties across the UK will be legally required to have such alarms. Let’s take a closer look at the new rules for Scotland, England, and Wales.
Scotland: February 1st, 2022
Starting from February 1st, 2022, all Scottish homes are required to have a carbon monoxide alarm installed in every room where there is a fixed combustion appliance (excluding those used solely for cooking). In rented properties, landlords are responsible for supplying the alarm. It’s essential that these carbon monoxide alarms meet the relevant British Standards (EN 50291-1) and have a sealed battery for the duration of their lifespan to prevent tampering or the need for battery changes.
England: October 1st, 2022
From October 1st, 2022, new regulations in England mandate the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in all rented accommodation by landlords. Additionally, this requirement extends to new build properties where there is a fixed combustion appliance, with the exclusion of gas cookers. Furthermore, whenever a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers) is installed in any home, a carbon monoxide alarm must also be installed.
Wales: December 1st, 2022
Similar regulations came into effect in Wales on December 1st, 2022. Landlords must now ensure that working carbon monoxide detectors are fitted in their properties where there is any gas appliance, oil-fired combustion appliance, or solid fuel-burning combustion appliance. These measures aim to protect tenants and ensure their safety in rental accommodations.
